Abstract: Weir2010 provides point locations for herring weirs based on a 1990 aerial survey conducted by Major John Fetterman of the Maine Marine Patrol. At the time, locations were based on visual siting from an airplane. Points were d on paper maps and screen digitized. Along with location, contact information was collected where available for each weir. In 2010 these locations were updated based on near low water orthoimagery collected between 2008 and 2010. If the weir was observered in this more recent imagery, the location and condition of the weir was confirmed. In most cases weirs were not found as they have not been maintained for many years or have been removed. In some cases the actual position of the weir was adjusted based on the orthoimagery. In 2011 an additional weir was observed in Harrington Bay east of Ripley Neck. This was observed from a boat during groundtruthing eelgrass distribution maps. The owner of this weir has not been confirmed.
Purpose: Weir2010 provides point locations for herring weirs based on near low water ortho imagery.
